  • Located in Coastal Plains of Texas.  Plains were used to graze cattle due to ample native grasses.
  • Used as open grazing rages by Spanish Explorers, then Mexican Cattlemen, then settlers brought in by colonist Stephen F. Austin.

  • German, Irish and Swedish immigrants moved into the area after Texas won its independence from Mexico. At this time cattle remained the principal income of the people.
  • 1882 A railroad camp was located where El Campo now stands. This little town was first called "Prairie Switch" because it served at the switching point for the Houston-Victoria Railroad and a shippiong point on the New York, Texas and Mexican Railroad.
  • 1880's El Campo was the largest pririe hay shipping point in the entire United States.
  • Late 1880's A continuation of a railroad by Count Telferner from Houston to Victoria allowed for easier shipping of cattle. 
  • Cotton, rice and corn became crops of choice due to rich blackland and mixed soils.
  • Between 1890&1898 seven congregations organized churches. (Swedish, Lutheran, Baptist, Methodist, Presbyterian, Catholic and German Lutheran).
  • 1896 Destructive fire.
  • 1901 library formed
  • 1902 first bank added
  • 1905 city incorporated officially.
